Results look very different from the lab

Some difference between LENS and lab is expected. Here's how to know when it's a real problem.

  1. Expect 10–20% variance. Labs themselves show that variability when testing the same sample twice.
  2. Use trendlines, not single data points. A single LENS scan vs. a single lab value will swing more than the underlying trend.
  3. Check sampling technique. Use the most recently matured leaf, correct node. For corn, scan halfway up the leaf.
  4. Check leaf condition. Use fresh, undamaged leaves. Store in paper bags in a cool/refrigerated area. Avoid plastic — it traps moisture.
  5. Clean the scanning surface (Part D) with a lint-free cloth between samples.
  6. Verify the crop model. Wrong model = wrong calibration.
