Results look very different from the lab

Some difference between LENS and lab is expected. Here's how to know when it's a real problem.
- Expect 10–20% variance. Labs themselves show that variability when testing the same sample twice.
- Use trendlines, not single data points. A single LENS scan vs. a single lab value will swing more than the underlying trend.
- Check sampling technique. Use the most recently matured leaf, correct node. For corn, scan halfway up the leaf.
- Check leaf condition. Use fresh, undamaged leaves. Store in paper bags in a cool/refrigerated area. Avoid plastic — it traps moisture.
- Clean the scanning surface (Part D) with a lint-free cloth between samples.
- Verify the crop model. Wrong model = wrong calibration.
